All instruments must be properly cleaned, rinsed and dried prior to either sterilization or disinfection.

Liquid chemical sterilants or high level disinfectants like glutaraldehyde can be used as a holding solution.

Ultrasonic cleaning solutions should be changed a minimum of daily – more if visibly soiled.

All packaged critical and semi-critical instruments must have an internal chemical indicator.

It is an acceptable practice to store unpackaged critical and semi-critical instruments rather than use immediately or within a very short time.

Hinged instruments should be processed in a closed position.
